DOBAG is the Turkish acronym for the Research and Development Project for Natural Dyes. It was instigated by the ground breaking work of Harald Böhmer in the late 1970s, which led to the re-introduction of natural dyes in carpet weaving. The project, in cooperation with Marmara University, led to the establishment of cooperatives, which gave women and therefore their whole villages a new economic boost, badly needed in an impoverished region. The use of natural dyes, excellent locally sourced hand spun wool and traditional patterns led to a big renaissance in carpet weaving in western Turkey and beyond.
The DOBAG Show of 1988 in our gallery was a great success
