ShahSavan khorjin, northwest Iran, late 19th century, all wool.

Warp-faced construction with a coarse soumak stitch covering four warps, which is slightly at odds with the fineness of the ground weave; original loops.

The function of the central slit, edged with indigo-dyed cotton, perhaps served to anchor the bag on a saddle pommel or to hang it in a tent. The woman who made this bag clearly had a strong sense of order
